{"id":493,"date":"2012-05-01T14:03:43","date_gmt":"2012-05-01T12:03:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.opengis.ch\/?p=493"},"modified":"2020-04-29T18:55:48","modified_gmt":"2020-04-29T16:55:48","slug":"qgis-on-android-using-external-gps-receivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.opengis.ch\/fr\/2012\/05\/01\/qgis-on-android-using-external-gps-receivers\/","title":{"rendered":"QGIS on Android using external GPS receivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fornat.ch\">FORNAT AG<\/a> which sponsored me I could spend some time looking for solutions to make QGIS on android working with an external GPS receiver that sends NMEA strings.<br \/>\nIt all boils down to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>via bluetooth works<\/li>\n<li>via USB not yet (as soon as I get more sponsoring or time I&rsquo;ll look more into it since I&rsquo;ve some ideas).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To use an external bluetooth GPS you have to follow six easy steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn of internal gps<\/li>\n<li>enable allow mock locations in settings&gt;developer options<\/li>\n<li>install <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=googoo.android.btgps\">Bluetooth GPS app<\/a>\u00a0(there are others as well but I had some problems, this was the best for me)<\/li>\n<li>Pair the tablet and the gps receiver<\/li>\n<li>start Bluetooth GPS select enable mock locations provider and hit connect (here you can see if the connection works by checking the coords you see or even by looking on a google map)<\/li>\n<li>start QGIS, enable the GPS panel (view&gt; panels &gt; gps) and hit connect. that&rsquo;s it<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The only caveat is that you can&rsquo;t check satellites and signal strength directly from within QGIS since the GPS data is relayed over the mock locations provider.<br \/>\nbut for the rest it works as expected, now it would be cool if somehow it would be possible to connect a magic usb-to-bluetooth converter to our beloved usb only gps units&#8230;<br \/>\nciao<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to FORNAT AG which sponsored me I could spend some time looking for solutions to make QGIS on android working with an external GPS receiver that sends NMEA strings.
